Reading aloud: The Bad Seed By Jory John We discussed Why is making good choices important?

Math: counting 0-20 by 2's forward and backwards, representing numbers in different ways: ten frames, tallies, domino, dice, number line, etc.

Spanish: Mi librito de las vocales (Mini booklets with activities to complete with the vowels)

Science: Mixing primary colors to obtain secondary colors
The lemon volcano experiment
Materials: a lemon, dishsoap, food coloring red, yellow and blue, baking soda, a spoon and a bowl

  1. Place the lemon in the container and use the spoon to break up the pulp inside the lemon so that it’s juicy and mix in a few drops of dish soap.

  1. Ask students to predict what color the “lava” will be when we add and mix red and yellow food coloring drops into our lemon volcano

  2. Add in the food coloring drops red and yellow into the lemon and mix.

  1. Ask students to observe which color the lava becomes once the lemon volcano begins to erupt. Add a spoonful of baking soda and use the popsicle stick to mix it inside the lemon.

  1. Keep mixing with the popsicle stick periodically, and adding extra lemon juice to speed up the eruption process until the reaction stops.

  1. Ask students to color the secondary color that was created in the middle of the venn diagram. *Repeat steps 1-6 for mixing Yellow - Blue and Red - Blue.

Fun fact about primary colors:

A long time ago… when you could not buy colors at a store…  people had to use the colors found in nature to use in paintings.

The color Red was found in iron-rich soil (red dirt) and was first used as paint in prehistoric cave painting. Centuries later artists would get the color red from squishing cochineal insects.

The color Blue was created by crushing up a gemstone called lapis lazuli found on a mountain in Afghanistan.

The color Yellow was created by using the pee from cows who ate mangoes.
